Isabelle von Boch: Creating a Spring Tablescape

New season, new spin on decorating your table.

Spring is the perfect time to add some newness and wow factor to your tablescape. For me, it’s all about layering complementary colors with accessory glass, linens and centerpieces. When starting with any table setting, it’s important to spend a little time in advance to pre-plan. Below are some examples on how to create a spring tablescape while still keeping your own personal style.

COMPLEMENTARY COLORS

First, think of your table and what colors you’d like to present. Keep to a theme of 2-4 accent colors…and really fall in love with this series of 2-4 colors, making sure they all complement each other. Pick colors from your centerpiece, your linens or from your dinnerware pattern itself.

GLASS ACCESSORIES

Layering in glass buffets, bowls, drinkware and vases adds lightness and volume to a table. These attributes create positive energy and movement, which is a very good thing…considering we are creating a space that will evoke family, friendship and togetherness.

TABLE LINENS

Layering with linens is one of the quickest ways to wake up your table. Linens are important. And, for me, they are worth the investment. I scour sales for beautiful linens. I know I will always use them. I have a collection of various color themes: spring/summer, fall, holiday, neutrals and florals. I layer them depending on what kind of emotion I want my table to evoke: fun, elegant, celebrational or calm.

INSTANT CENTERPIECES

Since I am usually short on time, I keep my centerpiece easy. I am a huge fan of placing 1-2 flowers in a series of vases, rather than one big floral arrangement. For starters, it’s easy. It’s also cheaper. And, it doesn’t create a big blocked area in the center of the table. I like my guests to all see each other! Creating a horizontal series down the center of your table is something everyone can do. You can use vases, bowls, tea cups or any of your favorite pieces that you want to highlight. Fill with flowers, candles or fruit. For added height and drama, layer a small plate  or platter underneath each piece. To enhance the ambience, add unscented candles. You can present these in votives or drinking glasses.  I do love the extra flicker that a colored votive holder brings!
