Even though I try and make every day special for my family, I love the excuse of a holiday like Valentine’s Day to go out of the ordinary. A few quick touches help to elevate the day with my family and loved ones. And isn’t that what it’s all about? A special visit to the florist, a quick stop by my favorite wine shop and bakery and I’m ready to go.
In my mind, February always means the tease of Spring. So, I go for colorful vases and flowers. If you don’t have a favorite florist in town, it’s a good tip. I often bring my favorite porcelain or glass pieces and have her help me with the arrangement. When I buy flowers, I buy enough to make several arrangements throughout the house, even it’s just a small niche in the bathroom. In addition, red glass is a great statement staple to have, you’ll find yourself bringing it out season after season.
We all love the wind down that cocktail hour brings. Cocktails and appetizers help create the mood for an evening. I find it’s always fun to start with a new cocktail that you haven’t tried before and pair it with traditional foods of romance like caviar, oysters and yummy finger foods.
I really enjoy the joie de vivre that Valentine’s Day brings…and find it fun to embrace this energy all day long, or all weekend long as the case may be. With flowers throughout the house, and a few tastefully heart-shaped accents (soap, paper weights), my home gets a fun and thoughtful wake up during the winter month. Iconic classics like heart-shaped waffles or cupcakes, seared scallops, passion berry sorbet and, of course, chocolate are all fun ways to share the holiday with your family.
I hope you enjoy celebrating with your family and loved ones.
